February. Valentine’s Day is in February and is the perfect time to focus on relationships. Whether you are currently married, dating or single, I am sure that you have had your share of fun or even disastrous dates over the years. Remember that one time, at band camp? I joke, but really I am being dead serious. Like the one time that someone thought it would be a great idea to take me, who hates sitting still and more importantly, one who doesn’t like to sit through movies if they are boring, to see a horrible James Bond movie. To this day, the only thing I can remember about that night, was not the guy I was with, but were the words, I am invincible, I am invincible. Those words really did become my mantra for awhile and while I know that may not seem like a horrible date to you, it was for me and this is a family friendly website remember?
This year, the Ginger and I are really working on our budget, being adults and making good on some financial debts that we accumulated, but we know that quality time is important and that everyone needs some fun and a date night, even better if they are cheap or free.
Here are 7 free or cheap date ideas that we have enjoyed doing:
*Picnics – there is something just so sweet about picnics. For me there is a sense of nostalgia and simplier times. And don’t think that just because it is cold or snowing where you live that you can not have a picnic. Make it a “stay-picnic” Grab a blanket or a sheet, pack some of each other’s favorite foods and drinks and enjoy. Take the time to slow down and just enjoy each other’s company. Having an indoor picnic and own a fire place? Perfect, start a fire, turn the lights low or off, maybe light a few candles and enjoy. We have done this before and it is one of my favorite date nights with the Ginger.
*Cook together -We love to do this together and really this one can be combined with a few of our ideas. Let’s face it, you were going to eat anyways right, so why not prep the food together. There is something about being in the kitchen together, working next to each other – sharing a little touch here and there, maybe some soft music playing and/or enjoying a glass of wine. The wonderful aromas of the food cooking and just sharing and spending time together, plus you get the added bonus of then being able to eat together. Romantic dinner for two? Yes please. Don’t forget to make this fun and dress up! Put on that sexy dress or your best suit for each other. Below is an old picture of us, doing exactly that.
*Camping – Backyard/Indoor – This idea is pretty cool for a date night too. If you own a tent, you could do some backyard camping. Have that fire pit? Use it and make s’mores. Don’t have tent or a backyard – move the date indoors. Don’t have sleeping bags, no problem, remove the mattress from the bed and set up your camp ground in the living room. You could even make a fort tent with sheets just like we did as kids. Get cozy together, dream together, laugh together and just be silly again. Oh, and don’t forget to tell your scary story before you sleep too.
*Game Night – I love playing cards, dominos, board games or completing puzzles. Usually we have music playing and we are laughing and trying to take down the other one. Some card games to consider, crazy 8’s, gin rummy, war, skipbo and more. Want to make it a double date, invite friends over and play hearts or shades. Want to spice it up – I am sure you can come up with a few ideas too. The first time the Ginger ever completed a puzzle was doing a puzzle with me and has created a fond memory.
*Get outside – go for a hike or ride bikes together. I absolutely love to go to our local state park. There is a nominal fee to get in, but there are a ton of trails and even a waterfall to hike too. There are also plenty of free hiking trails around where we live too. Not sure where your closest park is, a quick Google search will let you know. Getting outside and moving the body increases your blood circulation and gets those endorphins pumping through your body too. Are you feeling sexier already? Don’t forget to pack your picnic 🙂
*Go to the dollar theatre or rent a Redbox movie. Now I know that I talked about my bad date experience, but I also know that plenty of people love movies. Often times the dollar theatre has cheaper snacks too. Don’t have a dollar movie theatre around you, rent a movie from Redbox, Amazon Prime or even stream a movie on Netflix. The perks of renting a movie – you can make your own fresh air popped popcorn and pick your own spices and seasoning. Want to make it sweet – add some cinnamon sugar, want to make it savory – add some nutritional yeast and salt and pepper. Get creative and try new ones too – sriracha ranch anyone?
and finally, the last free or cheap date idea.
*Be an Artist – almost everyone owns paper and a pen or pencil, maybe you own some crayons or paint. Get creative together, attempt to draw each other’s portraits or pick an object you both are going to paint together. Agree you are going to draw or paint somewhere you would like to travel too, ie, the beach, mountains etc or your favorite animal. Have a pet – see who can draw the best rendition of your fur baby. You don’t have to be the next Picasso. It’s about having fun and having fun together. Don’t limit yourself and get creative.
I really do hope I have given you some great ideas for some fun and/or cheap ways to have some great date nights. Take the time to invest in your spouse or partner, if you do, your relationship will be stronger, healthier and seriously way more fun too!
