A pinched nerve in my neck. Yup, on the right side. It hurts from the side of my head, to the base of the skull and down into the right shoulder. Not sure how I did it, but I am recovering from the same. This week I have had a deep tissue/trigger point massage and a nice visit to the Chiropractor and ice, plenty of ice. Ice helps reduce swelling and inflammation. Plus it feels good.
When I was researching pinched nerves, I came across a few home remedies that made logical sense and I have incorporated some of these ideas. I thought I would share some of these remedies in case anyone else is experiencing this as well.
The first home remedies included getting more sleep. I know this seems like a well, duh, but really, when we are resting, it gives our body a chance to heal and repair itself. I can mark done on this remedy – especially as the body is relaxing and the pain is lessening, I am tired; therefore, I am sleeping more.
The next home remedy I have incorporated is to eat bananas and eat and/or drink dark leafy greens. This remedy was recommended because eating bananas and dark leafy greens increases your potassium and calcium. Calcium deficiency has been linked to a pinched nerve in the neck and potassium is important for cell metabolism and can contribute to the symptoms of the pinched nerve. Not only have I been eating some kale and spinach, which are both dark leafy greens, I have been drinking 8-12oz of green juice for the last few days. Green juice is also good for removing toxins from the body and is considered an alkaline food source.
Another remedy I have been utilizing is drinking a tea composed of fresh ginger and fresh turmeric. Both ginger and turmeric can help with inflammation and swelling in the muscles.
And finally, I have been doing some light exercise and movement. This includes walking the pups and some yoga. During this time, I have been listening to my body and not pushing my current limits. This includes being mindful to my current range of motion and making sure I am not putting any unnecessary stress on the neck or shoulder.
While my neck may not been 100% yet, it is 100% better then what it was just a few days ago. I have been able to increase my daily activity, but I am still taking it easy and getting that extra sleep.
Speaking of sleep, that is where I am headed. Until next time,
may blessings abound,
